Special Stains for Histology

Special Stains for Histology generally refer to histological stains other than H&E Stains. Goal of Special Stains is usually to visualize certain cellular structures or tissues. In contrast to immunohistochemical stains , special stains use conventional chemical dyes. Of virtually hundreds special stains described in the literature only some are relevant in clinical histology. This includes Trichrome Stain (Masson’s Trichrome ), Modified GMS Stain, Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) Stain and some others.
